Obeah Spell Basics

Obeah is a powerful magical tradition that encompasses a wide variety of spells. Although frequently referred to as a Caribbean folk magic, Obeah actually has roots in Africa similar to those of Voodoo. And, like Voodoo, although Obeah originated in Africa it crystallized in the Caribbean with the combination of diverse African magical traditions. It is this very combination of African magics, a combination derived from the pragmatic selection of only the most effective practices, which makes Obeah so very powerful today. The power held in Obeah spells combined with the diverse array of spells to select from makes Obeah one of the most desired and practical types of magic.

Obeah spells can be either helpful or harmful. There are love spells, spells to bring money, spells to win court cases, and even spells to curse or hex. These can all range from the subtle to complex and for this reason Obeah is often referred to as Science, or more specifically High Science, to distinguish it from the science of the material world. And the way magic within this tradition works upon the supernatural, spiritual and unseen worlds is very similar to the chemical reactions found in the visible world. Complex energies, rituals, and materials are combined to thrust tangible effects upon both the seen and unseen worlds.

Obeah in Politics

The power of Obeah is wide-reaching. Edward Seaga, the former Prime Minster of Jamaica, was a known practitioner and scientist. It was in 1969 that Seaga remarked, “The healer and the Obi-man are usually not two different people; invariably each practices both, some being more renowned for Obeah, and some for healing” and in 2007 when he commented on public opinion in the Jamaican Gleaner, “[…]these repeated calamities of international origin which have stunted the Jamaican economy over the past 45 years must be a result of Obeah.”

The fact that Seaga, the Prime Minister of a country, endorsed Obeah as a valid cultural and experiential force helps to illustrate its power. Seaga was known to always wear an Obeah charm around his neck. This was believed to protect him from harm as well as bring him his ultimate successes in winning elections. The story of Seaga – Prime Minister, Obi-Man, and Scientist – is one case study that shows just how powerful Obeah spells really can be.

Obeah Was Too Powerful

Obeah, like many magical traditions, was once persecuted and repressed. This, also, was due to the power inherent in it. Obi men and women were, at times, forced to hide from the authorities and culture-at-large in Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, and even the United States. One must only suspect that the power inherent in the spells put the temporal authorities on guard. Nonetheless, the unjust oppression of Obi practitioners faded, while the true traditions of Obi Science prevailed. Many of the elder Obi men and women remember and can tell you about the days they were suppressed and forced to practice in absolute secrecy.
